Magic Eye

Magic Eye are books published by N.E. Thing Enterprises (Renamed to Magic Eye Inc.). The Magic Eye books feature autostereograms, that allow you to see 3D images by focusing your eyes on 2D patterns. You must diverge your eyes to see a hidden 3D image in the pattern. "Magic Eye" has become more of a generic trademark, often used to refer to any autostereogram.

The autostereogram existed several years before the Magic Eye series. Christopher Tyler made the first autostereogram in 1979. The original Magic Eye books, Magic Eye: the 3D Guide came out in 1993. The Magic Eye book was followed by sequels, which were also popular, and the three Magic Eye books spent 34 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List. Since then, several other Magic Eye books and videos have been released, and Magic Eye stereograms have been seen on all sorts of products. Magic Eye stereograms are also in a comic by Universal Press Syndicate which shows weekly in several newspapers worldwide.

The Magic Eye images have horizontally repeating patterns which slightly differ with each repetition, giving the illusion of depth when the eyes each focuses on different parts of the pattern. Stereograms are created using a patented process which allows patterns to be used to create the final images.

Magic Eye stereograms have been used for science and other purposes. Magic Eye stereograms are used by many vision therapists and orthoptists in the treatment of binocular vision and accommodative disorders. Many people cannot see Magic Eye stereograms due to one eye being dominant over the other.
